Dog enjoys better quality of life

My dog was diagnosed with Wobblers disease. He was having trouble walking. He was totally unstable on his feet. He would not go down the 7 steps to our back yard unless it was a good day and then, only once. He was not attempting to come up those steps at all. I had to walk him out the front door and around to the yard and back. This started last summer. At first, his vet said it was a spinal cord infection. Antibiotics and pain killers were prescribed twice. What I know now is that it wasn’t the antibiotics that helped him, but the pain killers. He didn’t get better, but did show a slight improvement while on them. I took him back to the vet for the 3rd time and had the vet come outside to watch him walk. The vet lifted Daniel’s head gently, said that it hurt the dog. He was now unstable on all 4 feet after 14 days on the antibiotics and pain pills. This is when we got the diagnosis of Wobblers.

Daniel was given a steroid shot and taken off of the pain pills so we could see if the shot would work for him. It didn’t help anymore than the pain pills had been working. Four days later I put Daniel on Yucca, an herbal prednisone as the vet had said that he would prescribe prednisone next. I know the side effects of prednisone and did not want this for Daniel. The herb does not have side effects. This seemed to help some, but he still would not go up or down the steps.

I started Daniel on the magnetic pulsing unit. We gave him two twenty-minute treatments on the first day. That afternoon, Daniel went down the steps and came back up them. The next day, he went up and down (the stairs) the entire day. I am treating him 3 times per day and he is so much better.

He came in one day last week with mud on his hip. I could tell he was in pain. I gave him a Rimadyl (a 24 hour prescription pain pill). I also gave him a 4th treatment on that day. The next day, we were back to no pain pills and 3 treatments. He still walked down and up the steps! A few weeks later, Daniel is still going down and up the steps. I've seen him run like I haven't seen in quite a while.

When we have bad weather coming, I can see that he walks worse. His back legs swing out to the side as we walks. Sometimes there is a back kick as he is walking. But when the weather clears, his walk is almost normal. I am still giving him Yucca, the herbal prednisone, but I'm thinking that once we get into spring/summer weather, he won't need it. I'm still giving him 3 treatments a day and will definitely keep doing so.
